The First Gun—Mr. Delano on the Stump.
On Saturday, May 21st, Hon. Columbus Delano addressed a large and enthusiastic Republican meeting at Newark. The Newark American thus alludes to his speech:
"Mr. Delano gave us a strong and stirring address, in which he reviewed the steady advances made by the Slave Power since the annexation of Texas. Among other things, he noticed the law recently passed by the legislature of California for the division of that state into two, the object of which, he said, was to make another Slave State. He regarded the conflict now waged by the South against the North as purely a question of power; a question between the aristocracy of a privileged class on the one side, and the friends of liberty on the other. Having disposed of this portion of his subject, he referred, in tones of just indignation, to the conflict which the Federal Government was provoking with the Free States and to the issue towards which that conflict was inevitably tending. He expressed no opinion as to how the Supreme Court ought to decide the question of Habeas Corpus now before it; but said that such a conflict should never have been provoked, and that the Federal Government, by its persistent action, should not fail to lose ground in the confidence and respect of the people, whatever might be the issue. In years past, when all our leading men desired to cement and consolidate the Union, such a conflict would have been carefully avoided, and the laws would have been so administered as to conciliate and not to provoke the people of the States. He dwelt upon this important crisis in our own affairs with a stress and particularity which showed how deeply the proceedings at Cleveland were affecting the public mind."
