Full Text

It is expected that an addition will soon be made to the population of this country through the arrival of some 10,000 Russians, members of a peculiar sect called Dhoukhobortsi. They resemble the Quakers in their tenets, and it is even said that they were founded by an English Quaker about a century since. One of their chief beliefs is stubborn opposition to war and military service. In a land of universal conscription, as well as of religious intolerance, it can readily be imagined what persecution and cruelty they have invited. It is through the influence of Count Tolstoi, for whom the reigning czar has an unbounded admiration, that these unfortunate sectarians have been permitted a way of escape to a land of liberty. As a community they will bring considerable wealth with them.

There is no ruin in this world of wrecks more depressing and terrible than the ruin of a reputation. No libel law can ever make compensation for the mischief wrought by evil tongues. Yet in 99 cases out of 100 it is the individual who ruins himself first. It is only the dead thing which the jackal and the carrion bird attack.
