INCOME TAXES SHOW DECREASE OF 5 MILLION

First Day Totals This Year Far Below Amount of Last Year

WASHINGTON, D. C., March 18. -
The first day's collection of income taxes dropped $5,000,000 below the first day of last year.
It is reported that on March 16 the income tax returns amounted to $13,100,632. Last year, on the first day, the income tax totaled $18,148,963.
Senator Reed Smoot, of Utah, said he expected the treasury deficit would be larger than the Treasury Department estimated, following release of the income tax figures.
