RAINS IN THE EAST

The late excessive rains in the Eastern States have done much damage. A Springfield paper states that Westfield river rose fourteen feet, with such rapidity as to prevent the escape of animals but by swimming. The Cotton Factory at Chester—all the Powder Mills and one Grist Mill in Southwick—and the Bridges in Russell and Bradford, were swept away. We further learn, that one of the culverts of the Farmington Canal, in Granby, made at an expense of $7,000, was entirely destroyed. The Company had received this work from the hands of the contractor but a few days previous. Other portions of the Canal have also sustained damage. Damage to the amount of $10,000 dollars, was done to the crops in Deerfield. At Norwich, two men were attempting to hoist the waste gate, when a portion of the dam, including that on which they stood, was carried away, and they were precipitated into the stream. One of them fortunately reached the shore, but the other was carried down by the current, and drowned.
