Full Text

Arrival of Icelanders.

NEW YORK, July 21. -- A party of 140 Icelanders was landed at Castle Garden. Some of them were bound for Manitoba. The journey from Iceland is one of twenty-five days. Only two steamships a year are run between that country and Scotland -- one in March and the other in October. The past winter has been a very severe one with the Icelanders, and as a consequence sheep raising, almost their only industry, has been a failure. The winters are becoming more severe each year, and a heavy emigration from the land of ice to the United States within the next year or two is not improbable.

Besides the colony in Manitoba at Winnipeg, there is one at Sayreville, Middlesex county, N. J., whither many of the recent arrivals are going to engage in the industry of brickmaking.
