There never was a period in the history of the industries of Wilmington when so great a decrease in wages occurred as during the last fall and winter and present spring. In fact wages have fallen nearly a hundred per cent. in that time, and now good mechanics are being employed in many of the shops at $7 per week who had previously received $12 and $15. Others are now receiving $9 per week for the same kind of work they had been paid $17. Common laborers are getting from $5 to $7 a week. Thus one extreme begets another.
