RALEIGH, March 7th, 1855.
W. W. HOLDEN, Esq., Dear Sir:—In the Standard of the 3d inst., is a speech, purporting to have been delivered in the Senate, during the late session of the General Assembly, by Curtis H. Brogden, the member of the Senate from Wayne county, which speech abounds with the most violent and abusive epithets towards myself. To those of your readers who do not know either Mr. Brogden or myself I beg leave to say that no such speech as that published was ever delivered by Mr. Brogden. He did make a speech in reply to my strictures on his course in the Senate—in which he exhibited feeling and resentment—but he did not then use the abusive epithets which appear in his speech as printed. He used no such language as the following: "The rileness of his nature and the virulence of his heart"—"mean and despicable"—"moral turpitude"—"vicious and loathsomeness purposes"—"deceptive and iniquitous purposes and designs"—"corrupt and polluted source from whence they come"—"malicious heart" "despicable designs"—"callous impudence"—"unblushing impudence and unbridled presumption" "his own shame and degradation"—"contemptible malice." And many other expressions of the same sort which appear in his printed remarks.
Not a single one of the above mentioned offensive expressions was used by him on the floor of the Senate—not one. And I appeal to every Senator who heard the speech for the truth of what I here say.
Yours respectfully,
K. RAYNER.
