Aboard a Coast Guard-Manned Assault Transport--In the Pacific war theater it's every man for himself when it comes to thinking up ways of entertainment during leisure moments, observed Stuart L. Parker, a Coast Guard combat correspondent.
That's why no one was too surprised one recent Sunday afternoon when they saw a kite go sailing into the air from the stern of this ship. No one was surprised, either, to discover that the builder and manipulator of the kite was the 25-year-old father of three children: rather than one of the more youthful members of the crew.
The man indulging in this aerial entertainment was Vernon L. Watts, Jr., a carpenter's mate, whose wife, son and two daughters live at West Palm Beach, Fla.
"Well, it's one way of keeping in practice of entertaining the kids when I get home," Watts explained.
