Leading McAllen Citizens Urge Support Of Garden Club Tree-Planting Project

Here are some statements from important McAllen citizens regarding the agreement of the McAllen Garden club to supply anybody in McAllen with native trees such as ebony, wild olive, elm, hackberry, etc., at only 50 cents and with this price including the tree, the hole dug on the lawn, the tree delivered and set out. The only thing necessary to get the whole job done for 50 cents per tree is to leave the half dollar and order at the chamber of commerce office.

Mayor A. L. Landry: "The movement by the Garden club to plant native trees in our city at such a low price as the club is offering them is in line with other valuable work done by the organization to beautify our city, and I hope many citizens buy these trees set out at such a nominal cost."

R. H. Sawyer, president of the chamber of commerce and Lions club: "Getting trees set out at only 50 cents is getting a dollar or two-dollar job for only half a dollar. Every yard owner in town who hasn't completed his beautification work should buy one or more trees at that price."

Walter K. Campbell, president of Rotary club: "Many of our native trees are beautiful and when we buy these trees and have them set out for only 50 cents total, I don't see how we can afford to pass up the offer of the Garden club."

Earl Suttle, president of Kiwanis club: "Nearly anyone can afford to pay 50 cents for a pretty shade tree, and especially when this same 50 cents also pays for digging the hole and setting out the tree."

Dorothea Wilson, president of the Business and Professional Women's club: "I am certain that everybody in McAllen whose lawn is not already completely landscaped and beautified will wish to buy one of these native trees from the Garden club."

John Ferguson, Veterans of Foreign Wars: "Certainly I endorse the campaign of the McAllen Garden club to set out native trees at only 50 cents each. I don't see how they can do it so cheaply."

Bolton Hyde, commander, Loyal Service post, American Legion: "This is a worthwhile civic movement. The price is right. All of us who have lawns or yards needing more trees can certainly get a bargain when we can get a tree set out for only a half dollar each."
