Car Service Guide For Women Drivers

DETROIT—A handy car-maintenance timetable for women owners has been compiled by Robert H Kline, Dodge director of service. It may also be helpful to wives who do much of the family driving. If women follow it, Kline says, they need have no guilt complexes about not knowing the difference between the alternator and the carburetor. "You can tell a woman she should know basic car mechanics," Kline said, "but actually why should she? If she's a good driver and cares for her car, she may never have to put her head under its hood."

Kline's timetable goes this way:

At six months: every spring, have your dealer drain the anti-freeze and check the car's cooling system. Every fall, have him put in anti-freeze and check heater and muffler.

Every 500 miles: Women who drive on short trips at low speeds to the store, to school or around the neighborhood should have the oil changed as frequently as every 500 miles, or not longer than two months. After a dusty vacation trip, another oil change.

At 1,000 miles: Most new-car dealers include a 1,000-mile free service check of engine, brakes clutch, cooling system, steering gear, transmission, rear axle wheels tires and a safety check of all accessories.

Every 4,000 miles: An oil change, replacement of oil filter element and a maintenance service check of fluid levels; lubrication of hood, door and trunk latches; rotation of tires and spare; and a safety inspection.

At 8,000 miles: Engine tune-up and check of spark plugs, service distributor, clean air cleaner filter, adjust carburetor and check condition of battery. Clean and tighten terminals and connections.

At 12,000 miles: Rotate tires, including spare.

At 16,000 miles: Time for brake inspection. Wheel bearings should be inspected and repacked, if necessary. Replace carburetor fuel filter.

At 20,000 miles: Your dealer will check the front suspension alignment. Have engine tuned up and rotate tires, including spare.

At 28,000 miles: Rotate tires, including spare.

At 32,000 miles: Engine tune-up and brake maintenance check. Replace carburetor fuel filter and air cleaner filter.

At 36,000 miles: Rotate tires, including spare.

At 40,000 miles: Another front suspension alignment check.

In between times, Kline suggests, these service tips for women:

1. Learn how to change a tire. If there's no one at home to teach you, visit a driver-training course or ask your service man. Have the proper equipment in your car trunk.

2. Keep an eye on three instruments on the dash: The temperature gauge arrow should be approximately centered, although in summer city driving it may go higher. The alternator or generator indicator is centered when your battery is fully charged. The oil pressure light should be off while you are driving. If it goes on, you need help!

3. Keep tire pressure at the recommended level,

4. Keep your car clean. Parking it under a weeping maple tree can be as hard on the finish as winter salt.

5. Know the telephone number of your dealer's service department by heart.
