A team driven by Corporation Counsel Whitney ran away on Fifth avenue, near Ninetieth street, yesterday afternoon. The carriage was overturned, and Mr. Whitney thrown violently against the curbstone, breaking a small bone of his left leg, and severely injuring his left arm. He was removed to his residence, 74 Park avenue. Mr. Whitney said last evening:
"I was driving home at a lively gait, and had reached Ninetieth street, when I came up with a big brewery wagon. I was just about to pass it when a small boy, drawing a hand cart, shot out in front of it. In order not to run over him I was compelled to drive up against the curbstone. One of my horses became frightened at the hand cart, which was a peculiarly constructed vehicle, and lunged forward. If I had gotten a clear road I would have had no difficulty in stopping them; but another brewery wagon loomed up before me, and I was compelled to turn again. This time the carriage was overturned. I got up, watched the horses until they reached Eighty-third street, and was then assisted home. One of the horses broke his leg and was shot."
"I didn't know I was injured severely until I reached home."
