Madison County
Negroes Plan
Hospital

Much interest has been manifested by both white and colored citizens in the proposed Negro Memorial Hospital. The institution is to be built as a memorial to the Negroes who are serving or have served in the armed forces of our country.

The need for such an institution is very evident, as 78.5 per cent of the population of the county is colored, and at present the only hospital facilities provided are at the King's Daughters Hospital which has two wards and two private rooms for colored patients.

Application has been made for the charter. The hospital is to be a non-profit institution. The charter provides that there shall be fifteen trustees, ten colored and five white.

The White Trustees are Johnnie Vohner. Joe Teaver. Stanley Matthews. Frank Allen and Robert H. Powell, while the colored trustees are: Cage Sutherland, Ben Tate, Bruce Coleman, Eugene Wiggins, Dan Williams. Sr., Iryin A.. Franklin. L. M. Tolliver. E. V. O'Bryant. A. M. Rogers and R. M. Mackey.

The institution will be built by the contributions from all the people in the county. It has been estimated that the proposed institution will cost approximately $25,000. No difficulty is anticipated in receiving priority for materials once the money is in hand.

Mississippi has one hospital bed for each 1,000 persons, while the nation averaged one person out of every 100 in a hospital bed in 1943.

In Madison county there are only 14 beds for more than 30.000 colored people. We have less than one bed for every 2,000 Negroes in the county. With the shortage of doctors it is impossible for all the Negroes to receive medical treatment in their homes.

It is doubtful if any other project would receive such wholehearted support by both races.
