Full Text

One of the principal objects of the recent convention of American Hebrew congregations in New York was to take measures to colonize the needy Hebrews upon farms in eligible portions of the country. It is a well-recognized fact that nearly all the Jews in this country have generally confined themselves to dry and mercantile pursuits, consequently a Jewish farmer is almost as rare as a Jewish convert to Christian theology; nevertheless, if colonized as farmers, there is no doubt that our Jewish fellow-citizens would eventually take kindly to the business and soon find good profit in agriculture. A great drawback upon the profits of the farmer at present in the middle States, who intervenes between himself and the retailer; but the chances are that in the Jewish farmers' colony one of their own men would be employed, at a moderate compensation or commission, to sell produce direct to the retailers and consumers, thus saving the middleman's profits. Doubtless, also, before long those Jewish colonists would open manufactories in their midst, with the view of introducing their goods to the consumption of the operatives, thus saving transportation expenses. The proposition of these colonies is a new and important one, and the experiment will be watched and regarded with deep interest.
