Doubles Its Quota
Mrs. James S. Williams, of the Glastonbury Branch of the American Red Cross, announces that the contributions of the local branch to the fund for the relief of the sufferers from last summer's drouth in the central part of this country have reached the sum of $1000, or just double the quota assigned to Glastonbury. Not only that, but the sum of $19.59 was left in the treasury after sending in the last donation and it is likely that still more will be sent in to Hartford. "As the need is still great and the national quota not reached, the Glastonbury branch will be glad to receive and forward additional contributions," said Mrs. Williams.
According to the figures at the Hartford office, the fifteen branches in this section of the state have given a total of $8612.20. That sum divided by 15 gives $574.14 as the sum each of the 15 branches would give if all gave alike. But Glastonbury has given $1000, or double its quota. The Glastonbury branch contributed $200 right out of its treasury at the start. Nineteen organizations, including clubs, churches and societies, gave $137; public school children, $64.13; proceeds of three card parties, $91.25; box at Glastonbury Bank & Trust Co., $2.63; box at Franklin's Drug Store, $0.58; making a total of $495.59. The remaining $504 was contributed by individuals. Among the individual checks were four for $50 each, three for $25, one for $15, ten for $10 and 28 for $5.
Mrs. Williams has been in charge of this campaign. Miss Louise M. Hollister has acted as treasurer. Other workers in the campaign were Mrs. James Sheffield, chairman, Mrs. Edward Warner, Mrs. Ernest Weir, Mrs. John Rutherford, Mrs. Charles P. Carter, Miss Anne Williams, Miss Elizabeth Way and Mrs. W. W. Pollard. Mrs. Williams says she is much pleased with the splendid response made by the people of Glastonbury and with the fine spirit with which the donations were made.
