SCHOOL
NOTES.
(By Supt. H. E. Henry.)
The United States department of education has designated the week Dec. 4-10 as "Education Week," and it is expected that the week will be emphasized throughout all schools of America. This will be an appropriate time to renew the drive for a new high school building in Ellsworth, and it is hoped the above dates will be open to the schools.
New flagpoles are to be erected on the grounds of the Pine street and School street schools. The law requires that flags shall be provided for all schools with suitable means for displaying the same, and that they shall be displayed at all times when it is suitable.
The school board has authorized the superintendent to grant a half-day to the teachers on Friday, Nov. 25, provided they will make up the time or forfeit the salary.
A few pupils are still being detained from school in spite of the fact that the health officer has pronounced the schoolhouse perfectly sanitary. This violation of the law is costing the city of Ellsworth at least $100 a week, since the State school fund for the ensuing year will be based upon the aggregate attendance in the schools instead of upon the number between five and twenty-one years of age as heretofore.
Tuition bills for the fall term of the high school have just been sent out, and it is to be hoped that they will be paid promptly; otherwise the tuition pupils will be excluded until the tuition is paid.
I wonder if it is generally understood that the agricultural course in the high school is to be open to students outside the school. No applications have thus far been received at the superintendent's office.
The patriotic spirit displayed in Ellsworth toward the sons of America who laid down their lives for world freedom on the soil of Europe is gratifying. Now let us have the same spirit shown toward the living boys and girls of our city, and give them the proper facilities for obtaining an education, and at the same time let the youth of our city prove themselves worthy of our best efforts by showing a proper regard for the school property now in use, a proper regard for their teachers, and, in fact, all constituted authority.
It is of utmost importance that Americanism and good citizenship shall be taught in the public schools, but would it not also be a demonstration of good citizenship if places of business were closed on Sunday? I am quite sure that no financial loss would result to persons who would thus set a good example to the growing generation.
