Fire and Loss of Life.—The dwelling house of Franklin Gallup, in the town of Groton, Ct., was destroyed by fire at 2 o'clock in the morning on Friday last. It commenced in the basement, used as a carpenter's shop, and had attained such headway before it was discovered, as to cut off the usual means of egress from the upper stories. Beds were thrown upon the ground, and by jumping on them the older members of the family escaped comparatively unhurt. But one of the children, a little girl about six years of age, perished in the flames, and two others were badly burned, one of them an older boy, so severely as to render his recovery doubtful. Mr. G's. loss is about $1100—no insurance.
