Full Text

Proscription. Those politicians who are alarmed at the growing power and influence of the Know Nothing organization, and who read their death warrant in the progress of the sentiments which animate the party, are loud and emphatic in their condemnation of it as a proscriptive movement. By the organs of the Administration, in the Senate Chamber of the United States, and in a certain class of journals in this and other States, the "proscription" of Know Nothingism has been savagely denounced. It "proscribed" Catholics - it "proscribed" foreigners - It "proscribed" the gallant patriots who dug out five thousand miles of canal - "proscription" was the bugbear to drive men from the order. This is all very well, as far as it goes. But it so happens that some portion of the opponents of Know Nothingism are themselves practicing the very evils they so bitterly denounce. The Post-master at Washington has turned out of office one of his clerks, who is also a member of the City Council, because he is a member of the Know Nothing organization. If rumor speaks correctly, too, orders have been issued from that Department of Government, giving instructions to Post-masters generally to follow the example of the Washington official. Is not this proscription? - Buffalo Commercial Advertiser.
