Let the appearance of the weather bear ever so black a prospect, yet, there is something in the 4th of July that is enlivening, nay, there is something in the countenance of every American, that says, "it shall not look black."
To commemorate the day (that will be conspicuous in the Calendar, whilst types are found to make an impression) yesterday a number of our citizens accompanied by Major Forde and the different officers of the Ports, assembled at the Borough Tavern where a handsome dinner was prepared by Mrs. Hall. A variety of toasts and songs well suited to the occasion, were given and sung: and we did not remark a toast, sentiment, or song, but what was federal. As the table was opened to all, it was a strong proof, that though there may be some disorganizers in the borough of Norfolk, yet, as viewing the value of our Independence, and feeling as every one must feel upon the occasion, the 4th of July seemed to reconcile, to bind all together as patriots and friends. It is a day that vibrates so strong upon the heart of every true American, that, though for the balance of the year party principles may disturb the peace of society, yet, on that day, it seems, as tho' no man's eye could catch another's, but it looked and called him Brother.
"United we stand, divided we fall."
An old motto, "but not the worse for age."
