Common Schools.—At a meeting held in New York last week, for the purpose of considering the condition and means of improving the common schools of the U. S. it was stated, that there are eighty thousand common school houses in the United States the greater part of which are entirely mismanaged.—The teachers were generally represented as being ignorant men, receiving on an average, only eleven dollars a month, while the farm laborer receives on an average, thirteen. It was also stated, that of four millions five hundred thousand children in the United States, only one million receive instruction.
