NOT GUILTY,
SPY CHARGE
SEATTLE, April 22.-Lt. Nicolai Gregoriovich Redin, 29, of the Russian Navy pleaded innocent today to a five-count indictment charging he committed espionage by obtaining secret plans for the new USS Yellowstone, a Navy destroyer tender, while he was with the Soviet Purchasing Commission in Seattle.
Redin was arrested at Portland, Ore., recently as he prepared to sail for home aboard the Soviet cannery ship Alma Ata.
Redin, natty in his Naval uniform and flanked by attorneys Irvin Goodman, Portland, and Tracy E. Griffin, Seattle, answered "not guilty!" in a loud, clear voice when U. S. District Judge John C. Bowen asked his plea. His counsel waived a reading of the indictment.
The Redin case is on District Judge Lloyd L. Black's assignment calendar and will be called up by him at 10 a.m., May 7 for setting a trial date.
