LOBBYISTS

Lobbyists spent eight million dollars last year to influence legislation. To the American Medical Association goes the doubtful honor of being the biggest spender.

The AMA, lobbying against public health legislation, admits spending one and one-half million dollars last year.

There are 435 members of the House of Representatives. The huge amount admittedly spent for lobbying is equivalent to spending seven thousand dollars on each 218 Congressmen, thereby influencing a clear majority.

The fact is there is no legislative proposal pending in Congress providing "Socialized Medicine." Instead of tilting at windmills, spending money entertaining Congressmen, etc., the AMA would do well to spend its money for the expansion of medical education and to provide scholarships for needy and worthy medical students. This Association has been backward and is doing a disservice to many fine doctors in our nation.

Rather than adopting the "cuss" word "socialized medicine" and enriching some of its own operators and Washington lobbyists, this association missed the boat if its leaders really want to clean house and take forward steps toward providing medical service and hospitalization for our people at moderate costs.
