ETHIOPIANS
IN REVOLT

NEW YORK-Reports of continued Ethiopian resistance to Italian rule reaching here by the slow course of private correspondence were tardily confirmed by reports in metropolitan dailies. For months it was known to colored news agencies that Ethiopian tribes were keeping up a guerilla war and were arming themselves with rifles, bombs and machine guns captured from the Italians. On one occasion Ethiopians are reported to have routed an entire Italian division. The Ethiopians are said to have increased their forces to 200,000 experienced troops under the command of Berou, former minister of war under Emperor Haile Selassie. These troops are well armed and prepared to take the field with support from the Allies.

Berou fought in the Ethiopian campaign against the Italian invaders in 1935. After the capture of Addis Ababa he escaped to Palestine and has been there ever since.

Haile Selassie at the same time sought refuge in Palestine and later came to London where he still resides. He never has abandoned hope of some day regaining his throne.

His last public appearance was when he before the League of Nations at Geneva four years ago uttered his memorable prophecy:

"I stand before you as the last bulwark of constitutional government, I plead not for Ethiopia alone but as well for the security of other nations whose sovereignty and independence may be blotted out by force of superior arms. The fate of Ethiopia may well be that of other autonomous states. You may forget what you did here, but history will record your deed and the world will remember your acts."
