The Farmer's Hymn in Spring.
BY James A. Jones.
Creation's Lord! we place our trust
In spring-time in thy mighty word.
Which saith, "who scatters in the dust
Shall see the germ rise through the mould
The seed, shall be in season heard;"
The youngling corn take healthy root,
The yellow tasseled field behold,
The orchard bough will mellow fruit.
We trust thee, Father! On its bed
We cast our seed with faith like rock ;
We give our plough lands ample spread,
And fence our fields from bird and shock.
We cull our vines of thistle-y twine,
Our orchards prune to suit the clime.
While toil our loved ones, wild and mute,
Their gentle hearts, with flowers to twine.
And wilt thou bid our ruins stand
And drench our meads in the gulf hurled
Which Spring wins from the rainbow arch:
And while thou guard'st our field from blight,
And fencest nature's perils out,
Keep from our household grief and guile,
And make our husbandmen and courage stout
