THE DEMOCRACY OF CHARLESTON.

A Cass and Butler Meeting was held in Charleston, South Carolina, on the 21st instant, the Hon. John Huger in the Chair, with thirty Vice Presidents. The Democrats of Charleston declare, in an able Preamble and Resolutions, that they cannot support Taylor and Fillmore, and express their determination to extend to Cass and Butler a cordial and hearty support.

We hail this movement with much satisfaction. It assures us that the gallant State of South Carolina is sound to the core, and that her Legislature will vote for Cass and Butler.

Mr. Badger, in his late Speech before the Rough and Ready Club, in this City, attempted to vindicate his vote against Mr. Clayton's Compromise, and pointed to the fact that he was born in the South and all his interests and feelings centred here, to prove that he was true and sound on the slavery question.

Now, Willie P. Mangum voted for that Compromise. Which is right? Is he less devoted to North Carolina than Mr. Badger? Again: All the Representatives in both Houses, from the slaveholding States, with the exception of twelve, voted for that Compromise; and we should like to know if they are all wrong, and Mr. Badger only right!

We desire to hear from Senator Mangum on this subject. His political and personal friends here are anxious to know how it was that he voted for a bill which, according to the opinion of Mr. Badger, "was a total surrender" of the rights of the South on the question of slavery.
