The sad fate of Captain Webb does not deter others from making an attempt to swim the Niagara river at the rapids. Captain Rhodes and Herman Burkhardt gave an exhibition of their skill in the river last Saturday in the presence of a few spectators. The men swam five miles down the river, and were taken from the water pretty thoroughly chilled. Captain Rhodes says he will surely swim the rapids, and may make the attempt to-morrow. His main object, he states, is to obtain the Government prize of $50,000, and if successful in his attempt he will build a $5,000 monument to Captain Webb and give his widow an equal amount.
If the Government offers $50,000 as an inducement to men to throw away their lives by attempting to swim the Niagara rapids it is doing a very foolish thing, but it is strange that if such an offer has been made people have not heard of it before.
