Full Text

The Baltimore papers recently noticed the apprehension of a Thomas Shortwell, in New Orleans, a notorious counterfeiter. It appears, however, that he has again eluded justice. He had taken his passage on board of the Ohio, captain Toby, of this port: while at the Balize he was arrested on board that ship, and spurious money to the amount of 70,000 dollars taken from him. He was landed at the Balize, and then the Ohio sailed. It appears that there being no civil authority at the Balize to take custody of him, he prevailed on a pilot to put him on board the ship Draper, bound to N. York: and a few days since he was transferred to a pilot boat off the capes of Delaware, with considerable baggage. He has passed through this city to the eastward.

[Phil. Gaz.]

[A gentleman who was a passenger on board of the Ohio at the time Shortwell was detected, informed the editor that the pilot to whom Shortwell was delivered from on board the Ohio, received very particular directions not to permit him to escape, but to deliver him to the civil authority, which he promised to do. This pilot's name ought to be made known and his conduct exposed.—Bait. Fed. Gaz.]
