[A gentleman who was a passenger on board of the Ohio at the time Shortwell was detected, informed the editor that the pilot to whom Shortwell was delivered from on board the Ohio, received very particular directions not to permit him to escape, but to deliver him to the civil authority, which he promised to do. This pilot's name ought to be made known and his conduct exposed.—Bait. Fed. Gaz.]

Lacking civil authority there, he was landed, but prevailed on a pilot to board the ship Draper bound to New York. He was transferred to a pilot boat off the capes of Delaware with baggage and passed through the city to the eastward.
