Impeachment.—A Committee of the Tennessee House of Representatives made a report Oct. 14th, recommending the impeachment of Nathaniel W. Williams, one of the Judges of the Courts of Law and Equity in that State, "for high crimes and misdemeanors in office." The principal charges alleged against him are, that on the 23d of July, 1828, he "did illegally and fraudulently leave the Court-House in the town of Winchester, and go some distance to a private house, and did then and there take the acknowledgment of Caroline P. Taul, a married woman, to a deed for a valuable lot of ground in the town of Nashville, supposed to be worth $10,000 or 12,000, with the intent to conceal the act from her friends and to defraud the heirs at law;" that he corruptly signed an endorsement on said deed, stating that the acknowledgment and privy examination were made in open Court, and when reading the record of the preceding day: directed the Clerk of the Court not to read the entry which had been made by his own direction; that he was guilty of habitual partialities and prejudice towards different members of the bar; that his politics were carried to such an extreme as to effect the appointment of foremen of juries; that he had omitted to hold terms of Courts in his Circuit, to the great injury of suitors; and that he had prejudged and pronounced his opinion with great earnestness upon a case of capital nature, which he was probably to try at a subsequent period.
