Event For Benefit of Odd Fellows' Home Building Fund
Plans are fast rounding into form for the sixteenth annual field day of Odd Fellows and Rebekahs Lodge of the state as a benefit to the building fund of the Odd Fellows Home at Groton. Conn.
Thomas Scully of Charter Oak Lodge is President of the field day association. One of the main features of the field day will be the State wide exhibition drill by the various Rebekahs drill corps competing for the state title now held by Sunset Rebekah Lodge of Manchester. Each drill corps will number from sixteen to twenty-four women in handsome costumes drilling under powerful electric flood lights on the track in front of the grandstand.
So important is this feature that the committee has secured the services of three officers from the Sub Marine Base at New London to act as Judges for the event and they will not be known until just before the contest gets underway.To date in connection with the state champions from Manchester. such drill corps as Mizpah Rebekahs of Putnam. Sylvia Rebekahs of Seymour. Our Sisters of Norwalk. Jenny Lind Rebekahs of West Hartford and Liberty Rebekahs of Hartford. will take part.
Two years ago at Charter Oak park this event attracted over 5.000 spectators who packed the grand stand and were lined up along the side of the track. During these drills not a single command is given by the captain in charge. In most cases the costumes are of silk of special semi-military design and present a picture hard to describe. So important is this competition that one of the large weekly movies are planning to take pictures of the event.
An added attraction this year that will be of state wide competition will be the amateur broadcasting contest open to anyone who is able to sing or play any sort of a musical instrument. The only requirements necessary to enter is to cut this article out of this paper mail it to the Odd Fellows Field Day Committee. Post Office Box No. 31, Hartford. Conn. stating just what you are planning to do, and four valuable prizes will be awarded. two for women and two for men. This event is open to children if they attend with their parents.
The winner will be recommended for Radio renditions at one of the New England stations.
The balance of the all days program will consist of Amateur Boxing and Wrestling. Swedish Folk songs and dances in original costumes. Exhibition Turnabund German society. Wild West Rodeo show including cowboys and cowgirls, wild steers. roping and rough riding. Exhibition of Baton swinging by Major Harvey and his son and daughter, Auto Polo. Rough and trick riding by Troop B.. Cavalry. C.N.G.. Athletic events.
Ivan White and his Hotel California band of forty musicians will furnish music during the afternoon and evening. and the Hotel orchestra will furnish music for dancing on the largest dance floor in the state. A midway, half a mile in length will include all the shows that make a midway popular. For the children will be Merry-Go-Round. Ferris Wheel. Circle swing. Pony rides. Boy and girl scouts, and many other attractions are being booked for the entertainment for all.
United State Senator Augustus Lonergan has planned to attend the field day during the afternoon. Lieutenant Governor Frank Hayes is also expected to attend. Watch the columns of this paper for additional field day news from time to time.
