We regret to learn that, about 5 o'clock on Monday morning last, the Barn of William A. Carter, Esq., near Newtown, one of the most commodious and best arranged in Frederick county, was discovered to be on fire. Prompt efforts were made to arrest the flames, but the barn, shedding, carriage house, wagon house, and all his farming utensils, consisting of a threshing machine, wheat fans, corn shellers, ploughs, harrows, &c, were entirely destroyed. The contents of the buildings were also consumed, viz: about 3000 bushels of wheat, cleaned and stored in granaries, and 1000 bushels in the straw; 100 barrels of corn, and 3000 bushels of oats-causing a loss to the enterprising proprietor of from $8,000 to $10,000.
The buildings are supposed to have been fired by a negro woman belonging to Mr. C., who has been arrested and lodged in jail. -Winchester Republican.
