AMEs Elect Delegates To 1956 General Conference

The Atlanta Georgia conference of the AME Church met Friday morning in the Saint Marks AME Church in its Friday session. The deliberations were ably presided over by Bishop D. Ward Nichols of the First Episcopal District who is engaged in assisting in the work of Bishop Sherman Lawrence Greene who is recuperating at Rochester, Minn.

The educational sermon was delivered by the Rev. W. J. Rowe, Pastor of Mount Carmel AME church. At the close of the morning session Bishop D. Ward Nichols presented the outstanding guests to the conference. Drs. S. H. Higgins of Columbia, S. C., Harrison J. Bryant, Baltimore, Maryland; L. T. Thornhill, California; J. A. Gray, Baltimore, W. D. Johnson, Jr., Md.; J. E. Beard, Secretary, Treasury Pension Department of the AME Church and others.

The same brought greetings to the conference.

ELECTION OF DELEGATES

Bishop D. Ward Nichols declared the house in order and ready for the election of delegates to the 1956 General Conference convening at Miami, Fla., next May.

Before the election of delegates he stated that we must find out if you are ready and the way to know was for each minister of the conference to qualify. All ministers qualified by the passing of characters. No one was marked.

Orders of the election: Tellers elected for the election were Rev. E. P. Yorpp, E. J. Johnson. Secretaries, the Revs. H. A. Davis, F. R. Harris.

The roll was called by conference secretary, Rev. Ben Gay.

Upon motion by the Rev. H. C. Carswell, seconded by Drs. T. J. Davis and others, Dr. S. H. Rome for fifty-four years service, was elected by acclamation.

BALLOT BOX

At the close of the balloting for delegates to the General conference the following ministers were elected: Revs. H. C. Carswell, lead the ballot, J. S. Downs, J. F. Moses, T. J. Flanagan, D. T. Babcock, F. L. Riley, T. J. Davis, L. G. Long, B. J. Nolen, Ben Gay, T. M. Greene and O. F. Maddox.

ALTERNATES

T. D. Dozier, J. S. Horton, W. L. Few, W. T. Gilliard, W. L. Scarboro, W. B. Freeman R. H. Martin, G. A. Roberts, L. W. Hope, W. J. Rowe, G. N. Jones, Frank Cunningham and A. L. West

Bishop Nichols declared that the above named would represent the Atlanta Georgia Conference at the fifty-sixth session of the General conference of the AME Church.

Dr. H. I. Bearden, president of the Connectional Council, Dr. J. R. Hurley, president of the Chaplain of the connection of the AME church Dr. S. H. Giles and J. W. Downs, Jr., are all standing members of the delegation and did not have to stand for election.

ORDINATION

Today at noon Dr. J. B. Shields of Hartford, Connecticut will deliver the ordination sermon when the class of Deacons and Elders will be ordained into full connection.

Bishop Nichols stated on yesterday that there will be a special session for the Missionaries of the conference under the leadership of Mrs. P. Beatrice Greene, the Episcopal Supervisor, Saturday 10 o'clock.

LAYMEN TO MEET

During the day a special lay session will be called by W. L. Dawson, conference lay president with W. A. Edge, L. A. Adkins, Drs. R. A. Billings, R. L. Chamberlain and other officials of the conference. Dr. Dollie J. Alexander, State President, will address the laymen of the conference. Y. P. D. to meet tonight at seven thirty; the young People's Department under the direction of Mrs. S. M. Wilshire Sup'r., of the Young People's Activities will feature the Young People's Hour.

AME CHURCH HOUR

Dr. H. C. Carswell announced that the conference forum would be broadcast tomorrow morning at 9:00 o'clock over the AME Church hour by remote control originating from St. Mark AME Church.

He also expressed thanks to J. B. Blayton, Sr., and Jr., and the staff of WERD for the fine support they have given the AME Church for the past twelve months. The public is invited to tune in and listen to the program tomorrow morning. Sunday afternoon Bishop Nichols will read the appointments of the ministers for another year.
