Full Text

The editor of the National Gazette, thus beautifully alludes to the recurrence of an Eclipse:

The Eclipse.-If there be a rational being who doubts the existence of an Omnipotent Creator and Director of the Heavens and the Earth, let him, to-morrow, make a fair and honest appeal to his eyes and his understandings; if he still doubts, let him, thenceforth, trust nothing, and believe nothing; but-wrapped in an atmosphere of dark scepticism-think "nothing is but what is not" He will mark the moment when the great luminaries of our globe seem to touch each other at their edges ; he will observe that this happens precisely at the appointed and predicted moment. Can this be chance, or an accidental coincidence? Did it merely happen that the enlightened men who have made themselves acquainted with the laws which govern the motions of these vast bodies, have told so exactly the time of their meeting? But mark the progress of the moon over the disk of the sun ; her regular march, her speed in passing, corresponding exactly with the calculations of your almanac. Her departure begins, proceeds, and is ended with the same precision, Can any mind which reasons, question that all this is directed by immutable laws, cannot be without a law maker ; and he must be Omnipotent and Eternal.- Chance! Accident! It would be wiser to say, that the verses of Homer, or the splendid fabric of St. Peter's at Rome, were produced by fortuitous combination of matter, formed on no plan, directed by no intelligence.
