The recent District Eleven Council meeting of Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers International Union held in Toledo was highlighted by an address by Ben Schafer, Int'l. Union Vice President.
He emphasized the difference between our OCAW Union and what is being found in the Union now under investigation. He pointed out that our Union is as clean as a hound's tooth and we can be proud of it and we should strive to maintain its cleanliness.
A resolution by the Council was unanimously adopted which supports fully the recently adopted Code of Ethical Practices of the AFL-CIO.
The great majority of organized labor in America is not to be degraded by the Union Officials who have failed in their responsibilities to their members and organized labor. Certainly anyone who has not fulfilled their obligation is not fit for office either in the Union or any Public Office.
Those who have not fulfilled their sacred trust should be thrown out of office and out of the labor movement.
There are those who will attempt to judge organized labor on the basis of what is being uncovered in the Teamsters Union. The guilty officers have done a grave injustice to all organized labor.
The decent people in the labor movement have an obligation to protect the whole labor movement from the corrupt and unscrupulous few who will weaken and destroy the labor movement in America if they are permitted to go unchallenged.
Strike votes taken recently by groups in our Local in conjunction with the current wage drive in the Oil Industry were carried by large majorities - at Cities Service Terminal by 100%, at Phillips Petroleum Plant by 87% and at Pure Oil Refinery by 97%. More votes than that many questions were cleared up.
