Thursday, March 11, 1858
Senate:—A bill was reported authorizing the extension of the Manassas Gap Railroad to the Virginia and Kentucky line.
The joint resolution for constituting the First and Second Auditor and the Register of the Land Office 'A Board of Claims,' was taken up and, after having been amended, adopted—yeas 35, nays 0.
The Covington and Ohio Railroad bill was taken up and, the question being on the amendment offered by Mr. Beale, that gentleman spoke at length in its support.—Messrs. Floyd, Rives and others opposed the amendment. After a protracted debate, Mr. Deaneale proposed to amend the amendment by striking out ten millions and inserting six millions. Adopted—yeas 20, nays 12.
Mr. Deaneale then offered the following addition to his amendment: 'And provided further, That the amount hereby appropriated shall be expended from its Eastern terminus Westward.' This was adopted—yeas 17, nays 14.
The question then was on Mr. Beale's amendment as amended, and it was decided in the negative—yeas 15, nays 18.
House.—The bill to prevent the unlawful bridging of the Ohio River was passed—yeas 78, nays 7.
The following bills were passed: Authorizing Justices of the Peace to give judgment on forthcoming bonds taken by constables on executions issued by a Justice.—Amending the 11th section of chapter 56, of the Code of Virginia, to give turnpike companies a right of way only in the lands condemned for the turnpike.
