THE DEBUT OF CO. H.
First Appearance of the New Company Last Night.
A Big Crowd Was in Attendance at Keefe Hall.
Pretty Drill, A Presentation, Tableaux and Dance.
Co. H. W. S. G., was given a rousing reception on the occasion of its first public appearance, which was at Keefe hall last evening.
The rather limited space allotted to spectators was filled long before the bugler sounded the call to arms.
The floor room reserved for drilling was fringed with onlookers and the gallery was crowded. Co. K. the rival girl militia organization, was well represented.
Keefe hall was profusely decorated with the national colors draped, festooned and interlaced, with smart baubles pendant. Mrs. O. F. Cowhick had charge of this work. In the center of the hall, clinging to a supporting rod, were the initials of the company name in pretty letters.
The show portion of the entertainment was conducted in correct military style under the direction of Lieuts. Ruhlen and Walker, two dashing tacticians from Fort Russell. These gentlemen have drilled the company since its organization and the results of their painstaking work are indeed flattering.
It was the half after 8 when the bugle's shrill blast summoned the girls into the arena. They were clad in waist and skirt of dark blue, neat caps a shade deeper and white belts, making a quite fetching uniform.
The drill was a surprise to all and especially gratifying to those instrumental in forming the company. Intricate maneuvers unknown outside the regular army were executed with fine effect.
Many of the movements were novel to civilian eyes and were enthusiastically applauded. At times friends of the company were fearful of a mix-up, but there wasn't a break perceptible to the uninitiated. The wooden guns were handled with remarkable dexterity.
A pleasant incident followed the drill. Lieuts. Ruhlen and Walker were each presented with a beautiful art volume, being the two finest books in the esthetic Rhodes & Troxell stock. Capt. Argesheimer and Lieut. Furniss of the guards made creditable complimentary addresses.
The fly leaf of each book had been elegantly lettered by Dick Troxell. This is the company roster as appearing in the books:
Hattie Argesheimer, captain; Helen Furniss, lieutenant; Emma R. Schilling, first sergeant; Adah Haygood, second sergeant; Gertrude Douglas, Mamie Thompson, Dora Adair, Levina Grainger, Mattie Thompson, Gretchen Hermann, Francis Moore, Marie Wedeweyer, Minnie Gape, May Oakley, Maude Post, Jennie Tupper, Kittie Gordon, Mabel Tupper, Bertha Wedemeyer, Mamie L. Layden, Marcel line Roleau, Minnie Thompson.
Tableaux came next. These were quite striking. Much attention was paid to detail and each picture was a life like production of the subject, 'Dinner,' 'Camp at Night' and 'Columbia receiving Wyoming' were well liked. In one scene there was some shooting and Rev. Field, who was master of ceremonies, produced a dead mouse as the trophy of the chase and a mild stampede ensued.
Supper was served in the annex and the tables were crowded for some time. The names of those in charge were given the other day. Misses Lis'e Smith and Marie Maynard disposed of a big stock of boutonnieres in short order.
Dancing lasted until after midnight, with the floor crowded most of the time. A fort orchestra furnished music.
The entertainment will net the company quite a sum. Nearly 400 tickets were sold in advance.
