Full Text
The impeachment of governor M'Kean is not only honorable to democratic principles. but highly useful as an example to public functionaries—when men entrusted with the power of the people play the tyrant—the only check upon usurpation, is punishment; and the sooner this follows the crime, the more effectual will it prove in the prevention of transgression—the house of representatives have faithfully discharged their trust, and if ever a public body was entitled to public honors, they certainly are; for under various difficulties, which to ordinary minds and less vigorous principles, would have appeared insurmountable, they have arraigned a criminal at the bar of the public, and have laid the ground work, for his dismissal from office. The good effects of the republican system, and the vigorous pursuit of justice, will be rendered apparent, and the security to our rights will be the necessary result of punishing a man, who has considered the constitution and the laws as clay in the hands of the potter.
[Ibid.]
The fate of governors Strong, M'Kean, and Lewis, ought to teach public men; that the only safe course of politics is fidelity to the people.
