A pamphlet has just appeared entitled 'A View of the New-England Illuminati' which we noticed a few days ago—it is neatly printed and at a very reasonable price. The matter which it contains however, should be attended to by every person who feels a concern in the freedom, prosperity, and morality of this country. The resuscitation of the Jesuits in Europe is an alarming fact for Europe. Would it not be equally alarming to America if a society should assume their spirit in politics and religion? The Jesuits in Europe have commenced an attack upon every man of distinction who has existed within a century, that has shewn any aversion to the abuses, unchristian pomp and usurpation of the Roman church. Thus the abbe Barruel, attacks the celebrated Necker's book on religion, and declares it to be damn, merely because he wrote in the spirit of Calvinism. It is well known that Necker is a Presbyterian, yet in the effort to alarm the people of Europe for religion it is remarkable that while the combined powers are laboring to restore the Pope, the Jesuits are reviling all the sects of the reformed churches. It is curious to see these publications sedulously circulated in the puritan states of New England! A coalition of the Calvinistic, "whose tenets as some one said consisted in being every thing which the Church of Rome was not," and the Jesuits, is a prodigy indeed. Thus prodigy, however, exists, & we see in the pamphlet I alluded to, an exposition of the views and stratagems of a body of ecclesiastics, which have already produced the most serious evils to Connecticut, and which has converted the church of God into a political rostrum—and its ministers into peculators after temporal power.
