Full Text

APRIL 14.

Last Thursday an attempt was made to set fire to the Portsmouth sloop of war, lying in this harbour. We are concerned to state that it proceeded from design. It seems a number of the seamen have proved mutinous, and intended as soon as the sloop had got to sea to murder the officers and carry her into some French port. It was while the ringleaders were in irons in consequence of this discovery, that some of the rest made this attempt to fire the vessel. About twenty are under guard at Fort Jay, and it is to be hoped a severe example will be made of them.
