Full Text

Indictment of Griffin.-We learn that two bills of indictment have been found by the grand jury of the United States district court, now sitting in Albany, against Edward H. C. Griffin, lately a clerk in the post office in this city, for abstracting letters, &c., from the mail. He was arrested yesterday by M. G. Warner, esq., United States deputy marshal, and admitted to bail upon both indictments. It is of course unknown when the trial will take place, but probably at an early day. Meanwhile it would be premature, and alike prejudicial to the rights of the accused and the public interests, to express opinions as to his innocence or guilt. His previous good standing, and the humane presumption of the law, that every man should be held innocent until he is proved guilty, are guaranties of his final acquittal in the absence of satisfactory and convincing proof of his guilt. Opinions formed and expressed in advance of the trial are therefore unavailable for any legitimate purpose.
