Emboscade and Boston frigates.

An account of the Action between those Frigates, by a person on board the latter.

Yesterday arrived here in a pilot-boat from Cape-May, Mr. Barnes, and two other pilots belonging to this city. On Friday last, as they were cruising off the Capes, they fell in with the Boston frigate, from which they took Mr. Whitney, lieutenant of the Republican privateer, taken by the frigate on Sunday the 28th ult. off Sandy Hook. By these gentlemen we have the following particulars of the engagement between that vessel and the Emboscade, on Thursday last.

The action commenced by a broadside from the Boston, which being returned her cross jack-yard was carried away, and the mizen topsail rendered almost useless. The fire from the Boston was much quicker than that of the Emboscade, but not so well directed, as it appeared almost every shot from the latter took effect: the Boston received six 12 pound shot just below the surface of the water.

The action continued above two hours, during which the Boston, having lost her Commander and every other officer (except the master and his mates) being killed or wounded, and the ship losing her main top mast, and receiving a shot in her fore top mast; the hull and rigging very much damaged, with many men killed and wounded, several of the men left their quarters and called for the surrender of the vessel—in this situation she was put before the wind, and the firing ceased on both sides.

The Emboscade gave chase, but her rigging had been so much injured that she could not overtake the Boston, and gave up the chase. Indeed the sails of both ships were scarcely manageable.

Captain Courtney, and the captain of the marines fell in the early part of the action. Our informant adds, that had the action continued but a few minutes longer, the British frigate must inevitably have struck. The Emboscade not being able to come up with the Boston, hauled her wind and stood after an English brig, which she soon after took.

The number of killed and wounded on board the Boston is said to be thirty-five. She intended coming into the Delaware, but hearing of the two French men of war in this port he put back.
