RETURNS FROM PRISON, ATTACKS GIRL HE WOOED

Joe Carter, Scorned by His Former Brooklyn Sweet-heart, Assaults Her.

NOW UNDER ARREST.

Detectives Say He Has Just Served Fifteen-Year Sentence.

"Men, I want you to remove your masks and look at this man," said Capt. McCauley to his staff of detectives at Brooklyn Headquarters to-day. After the sleuths had removed their black face coverings the captain told them to take a good look and remember the man.

"He is Joseph Carter, a bad gun man, who won't hesitate to shoot if cornered at his crime. He completed fifteen years at Dannemora seven months ago. I want you to arrest him every time you find him in Brooklyn. Release him. We must keep him out of Brooklyn."

Capt. McCauley said that he was living straight and Carter at this point protested tearfully that there was no reason for molesting him.

"You ought to be pinched on general principles," replied McCauley.

Then it developed that the Brooklyn Detective Bureau had enlisted in the gallant task of protecting a woman whose identity was to remain secret.

Before Carter was sent up the river he had made love to a girl who did not know his occupation. On being released recently Carter made at once for Brooklyn and was observed occasionally by diligent detectives who knew him as a burglar. What he was after was not known until it was learned that after searching he recently found the woman he was looking for, the former girl he wooed.

He walked in on her and demanded to be taken back into her affections.

She repelled him, but did not raise an alarm, fearing the scandal she would bring down on herself. She had become engaged to marry an honest man and told Carter, who attacked her, escaping after the assault. The police were quietly notified and they nabbed the ex-convict to-day.

He was arraigned in Adams Street Court as a vagrant and sent to Raymond Street Jail for further examination Monday.
