some ten or twelve in number, from some of
the tribes of the West, are now in Winchester
for exhibition. They are said to be the
Sacs, Foxes, and Iowas; and, no doubt, are
good enough specimens of the savage race.—
It is thought, however, that just in these
times, we are, all of us, about savage enough
ourselves; and that before the present crisis
is over, we need not go to the Rocky Mountains to see the rudis in natura (barbarities of
life) but may find enough of it at home. Our
Constables, Sheriffs and other officers of the
law, are, just now, about as "savage looking
Foxes" as we wish to see, and if they only can
be duped, we shall not be ambitious to meet
any other specimens of the tribe. If, however,
the pictures of distress they give us, are
to be believed, they see enough of the savage
every day, and in some of the counties, it is
said, the distress is worse than savage. But
the arrival of our Indian friends may be appropriate, after all, to teach us submission to our
fate, from a specimen of their own.
