Full Text
We wish such of our democratic friends as have any disposition to despond in view of the coming contest, could come in immediate contact as we do, by means of our exchanges from different sections of the Union, with that spirit and enthusiasm which is manifesting itself among the democracy of the nation. It is a spirit which cannot be mistaken. It is true we may not rely upon everything the newspapers say, yet the dullest cannot fail to perceive in this case the substantial reality. There is not from Maine to Florida one dissenting voice among democrats. All is harmony, and with truth may we say, "Our union is perfect." We look upon the battle as more than half won already. We see the unfailing indications of success, in the confident tone and spirit which now animates the democracy, confirming the timid and wavering; and uniting all in a solid phalanx, which will march with irresistible strength into the contest. And whilst we are confirmed by the tone, spirit and determination of the democracy all over the Union, we find equal cause for confidence in the standing of the two candidates before the American people. Can it be possible, that he whose sins both moral and political are as thick upon his head as are his grey hairs; and who has three times been defeated by the American people, in consequence, can now in opposition to a man irreproachable in every point of view secure the vote of the American people. If we ever had confidence in any thing, we are now confident that the Democratic nominees for President and Vice President will be triumphantly victorious.
