Oct. 5. Private letters from Croydon, mention, that at the late Assizes there, a certain Right Honourable gentleman, who has been of late very cavalierly treated by a popular Baron, asked him whether he was the author of "Another Freeholder of Surrey?" To which the other without the least hesitation, replied in the affirmative, and added, that he was much surprised how he could want that information, as he had left orders with the Printer not to conceal his name. Some abusive terms then took place; however, by the interposition of friends, the affair was then prevented from going further; but we since hear, that Mr. Onslow is determined to spare no expense that the laws will admit of, to obtain satisfaction. We hear that one of the Lords of the Treasury has retained ten eminent Counsellors against the Author of a Letter signed Another Freeholder of Surrey: and We are farther assured that Sir Fletcher Norton will appear again at the Bar on this Occasion. The Rev. Mr. Horne, we hear has declared he will not retain any Counsel to plead his cause, if Mr. Q-- should prosecute him; but is determined to claim the ancient custom and right of an Englishman to plead his own cause. Though custom, precedent, and some late statutes, are against it, yet it is said he will stand up for and endeavour to regain that noble privilege to the people.
