Full Text

August 26. The following is the origin of the fashion of the little round hat worn at present by our bucks and PETIT MAITRES: Monsieur le Comte d'Artois, being out in a field near Versailles, where a very pretty brunette was milking her cow, and singing a sans souci to each press she gave the paps, he insisted on, and took a kiss. The lass returned the salute with a courtesy, and said with a smart air to the Comte, Sir, if you mean to be familiar in my dairy, you must accustom yourself to bearing the burden of part of its furniture. And so saying, she put the skimming dish on his Lordship's head. This story soon got abroad, and as nothing is so common in France as to create a fashion from the most trifling incident, every man of the gay circle immediately got a hat as nearly resembling a SKIMMING DISH as possible, and it soon got the name of the MILKMAID'S FROLIC.
