Extract of a letter to the Editor of the Enquirer, dated Washington, Thursday, 11 o'clock, August 4, 1814.
"The official account of Gen. Brown's last battle has at length been received. It proves to have been the most glorious battle fought during the war. Gen. Brown, I believe, remains master of the field on which the battle was fought, and has been reinforced sufficiently to justify his remaining in Canada, and giving them battle a third time. Thus far the news will be no doubt agreeable: but when I inform you of the death of your gallant Brother, Captain JOHN RITCHIE, of the Corps of Artillery, who fell in the battle, you will regret the price at which the victory has been bought.
His death is mentioned with others in a letter from Adj. Gen. Gardner to the Secretary of War; Maj. Bell, the Inspector-General here, has been polite enough to give me the information.
Gen. Brown's letter, I understand, merely gives the result of the engagement; leaving his notice of those who fell and who were wounded, for a future one, which will detail the particulars of the engagement. From the character your brother bore, as an officer high merit, I make no question but that he will stand amongst the first in the report, having been one of the first in the field of battle."
