Full Text

At a late deputation from the inhabitants of Lisle to the King of France and the members of the Royal Family, to present a medal in memory of the Duke of Berry, it is said by the "Journal des Debates," a moderately royal paper, that "the duke of Bordeaux, a child about two years old, taking the medal in his little hands, instantly recognized the portrait of his father, who, kissing it, said, "poor papa."

It was a touching spectacle—that of this royal orphan, whose intelligence, though feeble, evinced already a perception of his loss. Mademoiselle, a little girl about four years old, also recognized the portrait, and glued it to her little lips. The persons present were deeply moved, and tears streamed from every eye!"

"Full grown dukes, counts and marquisses were among the weeping groups."

We are willing, sometimes, to credit a moderate tale, though it be somewhat rough," but must be excused if we are inclined to be a little skeptical in believing that a child who was born several months after his father's assassination could recognize him—but he is of royal blood, "and that accounts for it." We are willing to admit that Mademoiselle, after a little training and a few lessons, did "glue it to her little lips;" but as to the "full grown dukes, counts and marquisses," their tears are "dog cheap," when their interest is concerned.
