NEWPORT, November 6.

Last Monday in the afternoon, the Merchants, and others, of this town, met at the court-house, and entered into a very spirited and constitutional agreement of Non-Importation, to continue from that day till the late act imposing duties on paper, glass, &c. shall be repealed. One copy of this agreement is signed by 47 of the principal merchants & traders in this town, and we suppose other copies have met with similar success: So that, were we to form a judgment from the unanimity with which this agreement was entered into, voluntarily, and the great pains taken, and threats of compulsory methods used, to effect a general subscription in other colonies, we might certainly conclude, that the people of this town have entered the Non-Importation plan with more freedom and genuine spirit of liberty, & also more universally, than those of some other parts, who make much higher boasts of Patriotism, & endeavour to stigmatize this place as not having a proper sense of the Liberties of America, and of the horrid Tyranny with which this Continent is threatened!
