The East Ohio Gas Company is looking for outstanding high school seniors to participate in a four-year renewable scholarship program, it was announced this week.
According to Robert W. Ramsdell, East Ohio President, the company will award four-year, tuition-paid scholarships to two young men residing in the area served by East Ohio.
The two annual grants are part of a program designed to help meet the growing need for qualified engineers in the natural gas industry, Ramsdell said.
Recipients will work toward a bachelor of science degree in engineering at the Institute of Gas Technology in cooperation with the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago.
In addition, they will be given an opportunity to gain working knowledge of the natural gas industry through salaried summer employment with the company.
Ramsdell explained that there is an urgent need for men with scientific training in the natural gas industry-now the nation's fifth largest and one of the fastest growing.
To qualify, the applicant must be in the upper 15 per cent of his high school class and be acceptable, after passing entrance examinations, to the college.
Candidates for the scholarships should also apply through their high school principal. Final selection will be made by an East Ohio scholarship committee with the assistance of local school boards. Deadline for application is Monday, March 31.
