December 1, 1738.

Yesterday being St. Andrew's Day, there was a Meeting of Several Gentlemen, at the House of Mr. Nicholas Waters, in Hanover County, where a handsome Dinner was provided for the Company. After Dinner, they form'd themselves into a Club, having chosen a President, a Treasurer, and a Secretary, and agreed upon certain Rules, for the better Regulation of the said Society: The Principal of which are as follows, viz.

1. A Sermon is to be preached annually, on St. Andrew's Day, at the Lower Church in St. Paul's Parish, in the aforesaid County, either by the Rev. Mr. Henry, or Some other Clergyman of the Scotch Nation.

2. Every Member is to pay 7 s. and 6 d. into the Treasurer's Hands; 2 s. and 6 d. whereof towards the Expence of the Day, and the rest to be applied to charitable Uses.

3. Swearing, and other Profanenefs, committed in the Club, to be punish'd by Fine.

4. Any Gentleman is to be admitted into the Club, upon his paying the aforesaid Sum of 7 s. and 6 d. And after such Admission, every Member, whether absent or present, is to be taxed annually with the said Sum.

As the Design of this Institution is at least Innocent, 'tis hoped, that Gentlemen of the Scotch Nation, and others, who are desirous to see their Friends and Countrymen from the most distant Parts of this Colony, and to enjoy a cheerful and harmless Conversation, upon the annual Return of the said Festival, will meet at the aforesaid Church, in the Neighbourhood of which the Club is to be held'; and the Situation of the Lower Part of Hanover being So commodious, both to the Southern and Northern Inhabitants of this Country, and such Accommodations for Lodging, convenient to the Place of Meeting, 'tis not doubted, but there will be a great Appearance upon the next Return of the said Solemnity.

N. B. If St. Andrew's Day shall happen on a Sunday, or be Rainy, the Club is to meet the Day following, if fair, if not, then the next fair Day.
