Important changes in the plans for the collection of rubbish in Augusta during the present Clean-Up campaign were announced to the Journal yesterday by Mayor Sanford L. Fogg as a result of the meeting of the citizens' committee on Saturday night. As a result of these changes, much quicker work will be done than according to the schedule in the Journal of Friday. Under the new arrangement, rubbish on all the streets will be collected as stated above, with the trucks in the possession of the city and the other teams available," said Mayor Fogg to the Journal. "Street Commissioner Longfellow informs me that he will be able to clean up each side of the city in two days. All that will be necessary is for the citizens to have their rubbish in some kind of a container on the sidewalk in front of their houses on the days scheduled for their particular sections. It should be understood that rubbish does not include ashes. Ashes will not be collected, but old tin cans, old paper and other rubbish from cellars and backyards will be taken care of by the city trucks and teams."
Indications are that the citizens will enter into the campaign with a spirit equal to that of any previous years. The school children will be home on vacation and this will provide an additional army in the clean-up work. Yesterday in the churches notices of co-operation were read from the pulpits so that information has been given through every source.
In the meanwhile, there has been a steady stream of householders to the stores of the city in search of paint, hoes, rakes, garbage cans, ash barrels and the thousand and one other things that are needed not only for the Clean-Up and Paint-Up but are handy to have around the house all the time.
